Lakemont Cottage
In October 2018 Julie Lampe purchased this 1960’s ranch style house to flip and resell. The four-week bath renovation you see here was one of many updates she made to this home in Winter Park Florida. By giving the bathroom a little retro glam update she was able to completely transform the look and feel of the home.
Can you give us a little background on the project?
This 1968 single-family home is a 4 bed 3 bath ranch on over a 10,000 sqft lot. The bathroom was one of my favorite projects because it was all my own. I did all of the demo work, the cabinet construction, as well as the design. I started with the floors and then removed the wall tiles, cabinets, and replaced the door. I had the tile in the tub and shower surround re-glazed white. We had some drywall work done and then added the cabinets back into the bathroom, applied the wall covering, and replaced the toilet. The entire project took about 4 weeks to complete. I even jazzed up the cabinets with some brass and acrylic knobs. The counters were a remnant piece I found at a local stone yard and got them for a great price! Before we renovated this space, it had yellow tile and accessories, and the cabinets had been painted yellow over white. The most offensive though was the carpet, that's right, there was carpet in the bathrooms, and it was covering some really beautiful terrazzo flooring. I created a concept for the whole house and the bathroom came out of the overall scheme, which was fresh retro glam.
From where did you gain your inspiration?
Part of the inspiration came from a very bold and glam bathroom I saw on the tour of homes last year, but I wanted the color palette to be a little more subtle and feminine. I knew I wanted bold wallpaper. Peacocks are one of the symbols of the town we live in (Winter Park) so, when I stumbled on the peacock wallpaper I knew it was the one! I wanted to keep everything else simple, classic and a little retro, kind of a nod back to the home's 1968 roots.
What made you decide to work with Prime Cabinetry?
We had used Prime Cabinetry before for a remodel we did at our previous home and knew the product was of good quality and easy to assemble. Plus, the price point was perfect! I also had cabinet samples on hand and that made it easy to select the style I wanted.
What advice would you give someone who is just beginning their remodeling journey?
I would say have a complete plan before you get started. If you are working with a contractor, know what you want 100% before diving in. Interview the pros you plan to hire, get quotes from multiple trades, and ask for recommendations from friends. If adding any wall application ALWAYS uses a wallpaper installer and a licensed electrician. Set a "Stop Looking" date for Pinterest and Houzz or you will drive yourself nuts when you see the next shiny object... make a plan and stick with it.
What do you enjoy most about your new kitchen/bath?
I just love that it always feels fresh and clean. The old bathroom was so gross! The wallpaper and the white cabinets and tile just feel so classic, but still have that late 60's retro vibe we wanted! We had an open house and people just gushed over the bathroom! I was very proud of the work I did. Prime Cabinetry is amazed at the transformation this bathroom undertook. It now has the bright and clean appeal it was lacking before. Plus, the subtle pops of style and color really make this a jaw-dropping space.
Prime Cabinetry was very pleased to see how Julie was able to transform this bathroom into an oasis anyone would want to relax in. We especially love the fun wallpaper and retro glam knobs. The Prime team can’t wait to see what Julie does next!
